When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Aweber
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Business, address, business size, record size and even the type of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain so they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good fit for their service.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to add distinct Types of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Aweber
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — that we’ll get into in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular areas, such as name, company, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or may simply add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much into the form Stuff here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Aweber
If you are not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example most people, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form screens on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can choose the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see exactly how your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What is email marketing with no dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, like moving a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so you can get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Subscribers interact with the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Aweber
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the market. Plus, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few email advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Aweber
