Background Commercial Email Marketing Software
If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Commercial Email Marketing Software
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, list size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you’re a fantastic match for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything before approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, most of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Select a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Types of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can choose your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Commercial Email Marketing Software
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — that we will get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors together based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as title, business, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Stuff here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Commercial Email Marketing Software
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example the majority people, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually offers a Decent set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Last, you can choose the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see how your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, such as moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means it’s possible to get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much faster than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Commercial Email Marketing Software
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of those tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at around half of the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options on the market. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few email advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
