If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Drip Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, company size, list size and also the type of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain so they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you are a good match for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, most of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Drip Email Marketing
Handling Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most essential facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, as well as another rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get into in a minute — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as title, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Things here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on point. Drip Email Marketing
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most people, you don’t have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the kind style, fields, background, name, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What is email advertising without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a bubble break, or an action, such as transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much faster than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Drip Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is among those tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful option for those starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at around half of the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
