Introduction Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Business, address, company size, list size and even the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Website, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, together with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing
Handling Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email marketing software now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Principles, in addition to another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — which we will get into in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as name, company, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Things here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on point. Email Marketing
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, but it does offer a great base to work from if, like the majority of us, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see exactly how your readers interacted with your emails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available statistics more than enough to meet their demands.
What is email marketing without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as transferring a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It is simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means it’s possible to find an idea about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly among the tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at around half of the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is by far one of the cheapest options available on the market. Additionally, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you can also get an even better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
