Background Email Marketing Reach
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Email Marketing Reach
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, list size and even the type of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to this domain so they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you’re a good match for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Select a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules , in case your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing Reach
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or eliminated so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Email Marketing Reach
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the form style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to a form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form screens on cellular by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can choose the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for each and every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It is simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you might want to skip this one. Email Marketing Reach
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of the competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the market. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
