When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Graphicmail
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Industry, address, company size, list size and also the type of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Website, and determine whether you are a good match for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it is a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Graphicmail
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed so.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we will get into in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Stuff here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Graphicmail
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, it does offer a great foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the identical task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the form style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, including adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of this Embedded form but as I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see how your readers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than enough to meet their needs.
What’s email advertising with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means you can find an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much quicker than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on how Subscribers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Graphicmail
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the market. Plus, if you’re willing to pay annually, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Graphicmail
