When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Hypermail
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Industry, address, company size, list size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain so they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you are a good match for their service.
(In other words, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can choose your groups or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Hypermail
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value besides what you call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple subscribers together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as name, company, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Things here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Hypermail
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example most of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check how your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup process is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see exactly how your readers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, like moving a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means it’s possible to find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Hypermail
The Price of MailerLite is one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the industry. Plus, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Hypermail
