If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Jaymail
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the last ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they can email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you’re a good match for their service.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to add different Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Jaymail
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You are searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and also the difference in title, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Things here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field information from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Jaymail
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most of us, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the close Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see exactly how your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available data more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email advertising software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply not as effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so you can get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much faster than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Jaymail
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at around half the Cost of the competition on average, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options on the industry. Plus, if you are willing to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Jaymail
