Introduction Lynda Email Marketing Basics
If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Lynda Email Marketing Basics
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries today, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.

So now, in this review, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Industry, address, business size, list size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good fit for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or segments.
The tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Lynda Email Marketing Basics
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email marketing software now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Principles, as well as another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — which we will get to in a minute — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as title, company, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Stuff here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on point. Lynda Email Marketing Basics
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a great base to work from if, like the majority of us, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form screens on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to meet their needs.
What’s email advertising without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Lynda Email Marketing Basics
The cost of MailerLite is among the tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of the competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options on the industry. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay yearly, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
