When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Mailaway
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical large players for the last decade. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Industry, address, business size, record size and even the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to that domain so they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you are a good fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and choose from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to add different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailaway
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — which we will get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as title, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the form Things here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on stage. Mailaway
If you are not impressed with what you have seen so far, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Decent set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation process is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is really where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your readers interacted with your mails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, like moving a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means it’s possible to get an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much faster than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mailaway
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly among those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it is still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Cost of the competition generally, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay yearly, you can also get an even better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the very few email advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Mailaway
