Background Mailchimp Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Mailchimp Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to add different Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailchimp Email Marketing
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, as well as an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — which we’ll get into in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors collectively according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to your forms which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the form Stuff here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Mailchimp Email Marketing
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it does offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the form style, fields, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available data more than enough to fulfill their needs.
What is email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, such as transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with all the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Mailchimp Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at around half the Cost of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options available on the market. Plus, if you are ready to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those very few marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
