MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain name).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good match for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But if it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include different Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailchimp Limits
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get into in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the form Stuff here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Mailchimp Limits
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like the majority people, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer lets you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup process is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the near Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your subscribers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What is email advertising with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an action, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means it’s possible to find an idea about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Mailchimp Limits
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly among the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at around half of the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options available on the market. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Mailchimp Limits
