When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Mailer
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.
– Uses tag-based system (called Groups)
– Powerful Segmentation using rules

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Business, address, business size, list size and also the type of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to this domain in order that they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you will not have the ability to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to add different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ options where you are able to select your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailer
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing program now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Stuff here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on stage. Mailer
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, for example most of us, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, name, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see how your readers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What is email advertising with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It is simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so it’s possible to find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s really much faster than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mailer
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of those tools biggest Selling things, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of the competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the market. Plus, if you’re ready to pay annually, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Mailer
