MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.

Like most email advertising providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the type of content you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you are a good match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of content to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailerlite Roadmap
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — that we will get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors collectively according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as title, company, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Stuff here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Mailerlite Roadmap
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the form style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will find the available data more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, like moving a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means you can find an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s actually much quicker than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s one Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you might want to skip this one. Mailerlite Roadmap
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of those tools largest Selling things, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an wonderful option for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options on the industry. Additionally, if you are ready to pay annually, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Mailerlite Roadmap
