Background Michelle Mailerlite
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Michelle Mailerlite
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical big players for the previous decade. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, company size, record size and even the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the option of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a normal effort.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Michelle Mailerlite
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as name, company, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much into the form Things here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Michelle Mailerlite
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, but it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example the majority people, you don’t have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything in the form style, subjects, background, name, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To visualize your backup in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see exactly how your subscribers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than enough to fulfill their needs.
What is email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so you can get an concept of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on how Subscribers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Michelle Mailerlite
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly among the tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It ends up, at around half of the Price of the competition generally, MailerLite is by far one of the cheapest options available on the industry. Additionally, if you are ready to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Michelle Mailerlite
