If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Myguestlist
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical big players for the previous ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, list size and even the kind of content you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good match for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and choose from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Types of content to your email, including videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to select your groups or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Myguestlist
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically added or removed so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Principles, as well as another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and also the difference in title, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we’ll get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Things here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Myguestlist
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority people, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email advertising with no dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so you can find an idea about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much quicker than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you’ll probably find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Myguestlist
The cost of MailerLite is one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this plan, it is still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options on the market. Plus, if you’re ready to pay yearly, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the very few marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Myguestlist
