Introduction Newsletter Software
When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Newsletter Software
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical big players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this short article, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Business, address, company size, record size and even the type of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything before approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a normal effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Types of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Newsletter Software
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — that we will get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as title, company, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you understand this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Newsletter Software
If you are not impressed with what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like most of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, including adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email marketing program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when creating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means you can find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s actually much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Newsletter Software
The cost of MailerLite is one of the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at around half of the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options available on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those email advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Newsletter Software
