If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Peanut
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, list size and also the type of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to add different Types of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your groups or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Peanut
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re looking to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”tag” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, in addition to another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — that we will get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Things here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Peanut
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, for example most of us, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your readers interacted with your emails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What is email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email marketing software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just not as effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means you can get an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much faster than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Peanut
The Price of MailerLite is among those tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options available on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay yearly, you can also get an even greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Peanut
