When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Resultsmail
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries today, email marketing has been Dominated by the same large players for the last decade. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, company size, record size and also the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you’re a fantastic match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But if it is a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or sections.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Resultsmail
Handling Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, as well as an alternate rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors collectively according to a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Resultsmail
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example the majority people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To customize everything in the form style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll find some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see how your readers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s just not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Subscribers interact with the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Resultsmail
The Price of MailerLite is one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options available on the market. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the very few advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Resultsmail
