When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Sendsay
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain so they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Website, and ascertain whether you are a good match for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Sendsay
Handling Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, as well as another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — which we’ll get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors collectively based on a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Things here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Sendsay
If you are not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it does offer a great foundation to work from if, for example the majority of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the identical task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than a few dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Decent pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover here.
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check how your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see how your subscribers interacted with your emails compared to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than enough to meet their needs.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so you can find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will probably find that this downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Sendsay
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an amazing option for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Price of the rivalry on average, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Sendsay
