MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same big players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, company size, list size and even the type of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, most of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of content to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can choose your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? What Makes A Successful Email Marketing Campaign
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, in addition to another rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — that we’ll get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors collectively according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Things here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. What Makes A Successful Email Marketing Campaign
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the form style, subjects, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, including adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
This is really where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see how your subscribers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, like moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s actually much faster than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. What Makes A Successful Email Marketing Campaign
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly among those tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it is still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the market. Additionally, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you can also get an even greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
