When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Zoho
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses today, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical big players for the last ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, business size, record size and also the kind of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to this domain in order that they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it’s a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added choices, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Zoho
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Rules, in addition to another rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors together according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular areas, such as title, business, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the form Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Zoho
If you are not impressed with what you have seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a great foundation to work from if, for example the majority people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the form style, fields, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Last, you can Select the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your readers interacted with your emails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available data more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means it’s possible to find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much faster than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you will likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Zoho
The cost of MailerLite is one of the tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it is still an amazing option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at around half of the Cost of this rivalry on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options on the market. Additionally, if you’re willing to pay annually, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the few marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Zoho
